Is Your Home Renovation Eligible for Canada’s Greener Home Grant Initiative?

Thinking about making some energy-saving upgrades to your home?

The effects of climate change can be felt all over the world, and Canada is no exception. Some of the highest ever temperatures have been recorded in the country, with devastating fires claiming the lives of hundreds.

Almost 20% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings and homes. To fight climate change and help homeowners save on their energy bills, the government has launched the Canada Greener Homes Grants Initiative, which provides homeowners with up to $5000 for energy-efficient retrofits to their homes.

From adding insulation in the attic to adding beautiful skylights, there are plenty of energy-efficient home renovations you could do while being eligible for the Greener Home Grant.

What Is the Canada Greener Homes Grant & Who’s Eligible?

Canada’s government recently introduced the “ Canada Greener Homes Grant ” initiative, which aims to improve the energy efficiency of our homes, create good jobs, and help homeowners lower their monthly energy bills.

This seven-year initiative is designed to help combat climate change, the effects of which we are already starting to notice and feel. There are up to 700,000 grants of up to $5,000 to help homeowners install better insulation, solar panels, more efficient heating, and better windows.

To be eligible for this grant, your home must be at least six months old and only one homeowner can apply per residence. You will need your property tax number and proof that your home is your primary residence, which can be done by submitting a utility bill or government-issued ID.

What Upgrades Are Covered?

There are many funding opportunities and retrofits that the Canada Greener Homes Grant can reimburse.

Good insulation goes a long way in reducing heat loss and energy consumption, which helps lower your energy bills. You can be reimbursed up to $5,000 for updating the insulation of the attic, exterior walls, ceiling, exposed floors, foundation basement, and crawl spaces.

Another tactic that helps reduce heat loss in your home is improving the energy efficiency of your windows and doors. Consider replacing your windows and their frames with high-performance Energy Star certified windows, which allow for a higher level of comfort and decrease energy consumption.

Solar is a growing source of renewable energy, and the Canada Greener Homes Grant initiative reimburses homeowners who install solar photovoltaic technology that converts sunlight to electricity. Even if you live in an area that doesn’t receive a lot of sun, you can still lower your electricity bill by supplementing with solar power.
