The work
In a townhome the plan is fixed by the party walls, so improvement comes from the depth of the house rather than the width. Opening the main floor front to back is almost always the first move.
The stair is the other lever. Replacing a closed stair with an open one, or changing the railing to something transparent, releases light through the whole core of the house.
Party-wall work needs care: sound separation, fire separation and neighbour coordination. We detail those correctly rather than hoping drywall handles it.
