A bathroom is the most technical small room in a house. Membrane, slope, blocking and ventilation all happen before anything decorative, and they determine whether the room lasts twenty years or five.

Dry-lay the tile first
Setting out the layout before any adhesive means full tiles land where the eye goes and cuts hide in the corners.

Build the niche into the layout
A recessed niche with mitred edges, aligned to the tile grid, looks built rather than added. Add a light above it.

Heat the floor
In an Ottawa bathroom, in-floor heat is the upgrade nobody regrets. It also dries the floor between uses.

Terrazzo, marble-look porcelain or hand-made tile — pick the one that carries the room and let everything else stay quiet.
