Is Your Home Renovation Eligible for Canada's Greener Homes Grant Initiative?

Thinking about energy-efficient upgrades to your Ottawa home? Here's how the Canada Greener Homes Grant works and which renovations it covers.

Thinking about making some energy-saving upgrades to your home? You may be eligible for real financial help through a federal program designed for exactly that purpose.

The effects of climate change are being felt across Canada, with record-breaking temperatures and increasingly severe wildfires. Buildings and homes account for nearly 20% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions. To help address this and lower energy bills for homeowners, the federal government launched the Canada Greener Homes Grant, offering up to $5,000 toward energy-efficient retrofits.

From adding attic insulation to installing new skylights, there's a wide range of energy-efficient renovations that could qualify your Ottawa home for this grant.

What is the Canada Greener Homes Grant, and who's eligible?

The Canada Greener Homes Grant is a federal initiative aimed at improving the energy efficiency of Canadian homes, supporting good jobs in the trades, and helping homeowners lower their monthly energy bills.

This multi-year initiative was designed to help combat climate change through up to 700,000 grants of up to $5,000 each, supporting upgrades like better insulation, solar panels, more efficient heating systems and higher-performance windows.

To qualify, your home must be at least six months old, and only one homeowner can apply per residence. You'll need your property tax roll number and proof that the home is your primary residence — a utility bill or government-issued ID typically satisfies this requirement.

What upgrades are covered?

The Greener Homes Grant covers a wide range of retrofits that reduce your home's energy consumption.

  • Insulation upgrades to attics, exterior walls, ceilings, exposed floors, foundation basements and crawl spaces — reimbursed up to $5,000
  • Higher-performance windows and doors, including Energy Star certified replacements that improve comfort and reduce energy loss
  • Solar photovoltaic technology that converts sunlight into electricity, even in areas that don't get abundant sun year-round

Good insulation goes a long way toward reducing heat loss and lowering your energy bills, which is why it's one of the most commonly claimed upgrades under the program. Improving your windows and doors is another effective way to cut down on drafts and heat loss through the colder Ottawa months.

Solar energy is also supported under the grant. Installing solar panels can meaningfully lower your electricity bill over time, even supplementing rather than fully replacing your existing power source.
